BASE Elective
Course objective:
Participants will gain valuable linguistic and cultural exposure.
Elective courses serve as an opportunity to maintain, practice and
perfect the use of the Spanish language. Through BASE's elective
courses we aim to break paradigms in which language and culture are
seperate and the former or the latter are optional as opposed to a
requisite to the acquisition of either.
The objective of this course is
to improve Spanish conversation skills through the discussion of four
films. Students will achieve this goal by
exploring and analyzing various current cultural, political,
and social events in
Latin America through film; conversations will be in Spanish and in a
casual environment. The selection of movies presented in this course
will help students
improve their ability to engage in meaningful conversations in Spanish,
as well as gain a broader understanding of current Latin American
culture and issues. No prior knowledge of cinematography or
principles of film will
be required; an intermediate conversational level of Spanish is
necessary. Try BASE's Self-assessments and take BASE's Written Assessment commitment free.
Classtimes are 2.5 hours from
6:00 to 8:45 with a
15 minute break. Selected films have durations of approximately 60
minutes; they will be viewed in two parts in order to maximize the
conversational opportunities following the first and second halves of
each movie.
Each movie will be preceded by a
brief introduction,
presenting any vocabulary and/or concepts that would lend to
anticipation and comprehension. The conversation component will not
have a specific Spanish structural focus, but will be an opportunity to
review and practice structures previously learned, in a real-world
natural context. The following are the movies selected for this course:
Day one: ¡Salud!
A
timely examination of human values and the health issues that affect us
all, ¡Salud!looks
at the curious case of Cuba,
a cash-strapped
country with what the BBC
calls ‘one of the world’s best health
systems.’ From the shores of
Africa to the Americas, !Salud!hits
the road
with some of the 28,000 Cuban health professionals serving in 68
countries, and explores the hearts and minds of international medical
students in Cuba -- now numbering 30,000, including nearly 100
from the
USA. Their stories plus testimony from experts around the
world bring
home the competing agendas that mark the battle for global
health—and
the complex realities confronting the movement to make healthcare
everyone’s birth right.
Day two:
Cartoneros
Pachamama, the mother land of the native culture,
drags herself on the
floor collecting her daily requirements. Character of thrift and
tolerance, the puppet is moved by the hands of a Tiritera (a puppeteer)
who tells the unexpected adventures in the street theater of Buenos
Aires. Pachamama, alike the ancient gleaners of the European culture,
who scattered on the fields, once the harvest being over, in order to
collect a source of maintenance - nowadays a new people of workers
invade downtown Buenos Aires, the richest city of South America. They
are the Cartoneros, that leave their districts within the neverending
city periphery belt, and push and drag their supermarket trolleys. They
seek in the garbage what is marketable. They divide white paper from
the cardboard, collect and trade it by road marketing leader.
Written by Ghioni, Carlito
Day three:
"Choropampa: the price of gold" A devastating mercury spill by the world's largest gold mining
corporation transforms a quiet peasant village in Peru into a hotbed of
civil resistance. A courageous young mayor emerges to lead his people
on a quest for health care and justice.
Day four: Special
Circumstances follows Chilean exile
Hector Salgado as he returns to Chile from the US, camera in hand, to
seek and confront the men who
imprisoned him and who tortured and killed
his friends after the Coup of 1973. Through his journey, audiences will
come to understand the legal, political and social obstacles standing
in the way of a nation's attempt, thirty years later, to overcome its
brutal history.
